As a leading New York dermatologist, Dr. Adam Bodian offers advanced technology to treat a wide variety of skin conditions and diseases, including skin cancer. Two main types of skin cancer reconstruction are performed at our practice serving Long Island, Manhattan, Queens, and nearby areas, including photodynamic therapy and x-ray therapy.
Skin cancer is the most common type of cancer in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society. Over 1 million people are projected to be diagnosed with skin cancer in 2009. When discovered in its earliest stages, skin cancer can be treated with photodynamic therapy, a state-of-the-art procedure designed to remove pre-cancerous lesions.
In the first step of photodynamic therapy, a topical treatment is applied to the skin and absorbed by the lesion. Then, approximately 14 to 24 hours later, a laser light is shone on the lesions to break them up. Only one or two photodynamic therapy treatments are necessary to remove the lesion and to eliminate the threat that of it becoming cancerous. For more information on photodynamic therapy or skin cancer reconstruction, please schedule an appointment at Bodian Dermatology & Medical Day Spa to speak with Dr. Bodian.
Our practice is only one of a few in New York to perform skin cancer reconstruction with X-ray therapy, otherwise known as "scar-less surgery." This treatment is performed in our state-of-the-art radiotherapy unit to remove cancerous lesions without any needles or cutting of the skin. Unlike traditional methods, x-ray therapy does not cause bleeding and can be completed with little to no discomfort. The treatment also results in significantly less scarring.
